Water Resources

Apart from 357 reservoirs with a total capacity of more than 700 million m3, the Province is building Xuan Hoa reservoir with a capacity of 15.8 million m3, a reservoir on the Tri River’s upstream with a capacity of 25.4 million m3, the multi-purpose irrigation project of Ngan Truoi-Cam Trang with a capacity of nearly 800 million m3. These reservoirs together with the water sources from more than 20 rivers, (with a total length of more than 400km and a basin of 5,436km2) provide Ha Tinh with abundant water resources of nearly 11-13 billion m3/year.

Forest, Faunal and Floral Resources

Ha Tinh has 365,577ha of forestry land, including 299,603ha of land with forests; 74,64ha of special-use forests, accounting for 20.4%, 120,390ha of protective forests, accounting for 32.9% and 170,546ha of production forests, accounting for 46.7%.

Timber reserves are 21.13 million m3. The forest coverage reaches 47%. There are 84,645ha of planted forests including nearly 43,000ha of pine forests. Ha Tinh forests are diverse in fauna and flora with more than 86 families and 500 species of timber trees, including many precious ones, such as Lim xanh (Erythrophloeum fordid), Sen (Madhuca), Tau (Vatica), Dinh (Markhamia pierrei), Gu (Sindora) and Po mu (Fokienia), many rare and precious animals, such as tigers, panthers, black deer, straight-horned goats, pheasants and reptiles. In particular, Vu Quang National Park (in Vu Quang and Huong Khe Districts) is home to nearly 300 floral species and many precious faunal species. It is a primeval forest, with economic, scientific and landscape values. Two rare and precious species of animals - Sao La (Starfish Saola) and Mang Lon (Muntjac) have been discovered in this Park. Ke Go Nature Reserve has more than 414 floral species, 170 faunal species, and 280 species of birds including 19 species which have been recorded in Vietnam’s Red Book. In addition, the ecological system of mangrove forests in Ha Tinh coastal areas has many floral and faunal species of high economic value, which concentrate largely in big estuaries, such as Cua Hoi, Cua Sot, Cua Nhuong and Cua Khau.

Marine Resources

Ha Tinh has 137km of coastline and 18,400km2 of territorial waters with four large estuaries and a small isle every 5km, which constitutes a great potential for a comprehensive development of the sea economy. Ha Tinh sea accommodates about 267 species of sea creatures including 60 species of fish, 20 species of shrimp with a reserve of 84,000 tonnes. Some 40,000 tonnes of marine products are exploited annually. The Province has great potential for aquaculture with 20,000ha of water surface (of which only 7,000ha have been used), including 7,300ha for brackish-water aquaculture in coastal areas and 2,000ha of alluvial coastal land for aquaculture with biological technology. The four large estuaries including Cua Hoi, Cua Sot, Cua Nhuong and Cua Khau are suitable for building fish wharfs or ports. Ha Tinh coast is rich in minerals, including sand and ores and many areas suitable for building sea ports that enable the expansion of international exchanges and development of convalescence tours.

Mineral Resources

Ha Tinh has 91 mines scattered in almost all districts, from the coastal to midland and mountainous areas. There is iron in Thach Khe (Thach Ha) with reserves of about 544 million tones, iron ores, ore and manganite in Vu Quang, Can Loc and Duc Tho. Manganite mines in Phu Loc, Thuong Loc, Duc Lap and Ky Tay with reserves of more than one million tonnes which are being exploited. There is a tin mine in Son Kim, Huong Son District. The Province also has titanite mines with reserves of about 4.6 million tonnes, which stretch from Nghi Xuan to Ky Anh and have the main composition of ilmenite. The associated minerals include rutile, zizcon and monazite. Since 1991, the Province has exploited and exported about 700,000 tonnes of ilmenite. There are ferrous metals in many places and gold in Huong Son, Huong Khe, Cam Xuyen and Ky Anh Districts, with an estimated reserve of 15,287kg. Non-metal minerals include construction stones, which are diverse in variety (mainly granite) and scattered in many places, from Nghi Xuan to Ky Anh and the mountainous areas of Huong Son, Huong Khe and Vu Quang, with an exploitation output of about 900,000m3/year. Construction sand can be found in many places, with an annual output of 200,000-300,000m3. Also, the Province has other minerals, such as precious stone, peat, mineral water, clay, dolonite, quarzile, quartz, kaolinite and sericite, a rare and precious mineral which has just been discovered.
