Thach Khe iron mine covers 300ha in Thach Ha District, about 6km east of Ha Tinh City. It consists of Deluvi, original and mixed ore beds. Original ore stretches in the northeast-southwest direction and is 3km long, 200m-700m wide, 17.5m-403.4m thick and from -7.9m to -706.4m deep.

The mine has total reserves of 544,080,100 tonnes (including 488,389,700 tonnes of original ore and 55,690,400 tonnes of devuli ore). Useful minerals exploited from the mine include sand, clay and a mixture of sand, gravels, stones and carbonate, with 80 million m3 of clay for making bricks, 11,650 m3 of gravel and 54 million tonnes of carbonate.

 Thach Khe iron mine has the largest reserves in Vietnam with 320 million tonnes. The depth for efficient open-cast exploitation is -400Am. Thach Khe iron is of good quality with a 60% Fe content and limited content of other impurities, such as S and Mn. The project to exploit Thach Khe iron mine in connection with the Vung Ang steel refining plant was approved by the Government in 2005. As planned, output is expected to reach five million tonnes per year in the first phase and 8-10 million tonnes per year in the second phase. The mine has concentrated ore with a rich content, large reserves and is convenient for land and sea transport. The mine lies near a coastal sand bank so the compensation for land clearance is negligible. On March 28, 2007, the Prime Minister assigned Thach Khe Iron Share-Holding Company to complete procedures to implement the mining project and prepare steps to implement a steel refining plant project with a capacity of 2 million tonnes per year. When the iron ore mining and steel refining plant come into operation they will create a basis for manufacturing steel products and developing Vung Ang’s mechanical industry.
